Tom Dixon’s American Adventure: A Look at the Designer’s New York Showroom

By  |

Tom Dixon embarks on his “American adventure” with two locations, one in Los Angeles and the other in New York City. While the Los Angeles location offers an ultra-modern urban escape, the New York City showroom provides a more intimate, museum-style experience. Nestled in SoHo, the Howard Street showroom has transformed an old shoe factory into a thriving design haven that entices visitors to explore, hang out, and peruse products from lighting to furniture to accessories.

The three-story showroom is a natural fit for the neighborhood, which is home to a number of top design brands, and builds on SoHo’s diverse offerings by bringing together material samples and prototypes as well as furniture and decorative objects. With distinct and elegantly staged rooms, the showroom is designed to appeal to designer and consumer alike, and is the perfect setting for Dixon’s many creations. The ground floor showcases his trademark mirrored copper pendants and lighting objects, which are sprinkled throughout. At the back, an ominous dark doorframe leads to “Aladdin’s Cave.” Here, each wall is covered in black Icelandic sheep wool, and hanging from the ceiling are Dixon’s Beat Stout Black lights, which create a dramatic, golden glow against the dark interior.

The spacious upstairs room  is adorned with objects in copper and silver, with an emphasis on kitchenwares and lighting. It’s impossible to ignore the eye-grabbing speaker/lamp fixtures born from a collaboration with Sonos.

Finally, the store’s basement is more product-based than the other floors. It is a cleaned-out, raw space where designers and architects can source products for interiors, as well as check out the impressive selection of Dixon’s hanging lights, including some of his most notable products, such as the Mirror Ball light, the Melt Shade Gold light, and the Etch Pendant Brass light.

So what’s next for Tom Dixon? Well, along with a string of additional retail spaces opening in Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, the designer has just launched a new accessory line for A/W16, including candles, drinking/pouring vessels, table settings, and more.
