Brazilian Design Takes Flight at ICFF With Six Designers Worth Watching

By  |

From the classic modernism of Sergio Rodriguez and Jorge Zalzupin to the inventiveness of the Campana Brothers, Brazilian design has a niche of its own - where craft, materiality and shape come together in very original ways.  Now a new wave of talent is set to have a chance at the international spotlight at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which runs from May 19-23 opens. As part of the RAIZ (the Portuguese word for root) project, thirteen designers will be showcasing their work at the halls of the Jacob Javits Center next week.  RAIZ is an initiative to from the furniture makers association, Sindmóveis, and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, Apex-Brasil.

Sergio Fahrer enter the world of a design from an unusual angle: studying musical instruments design at the Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. He then applied that knowledge (and one can say rhythm) to furniture design, establishing a successful practice in São Paulo. Since 2007, brother Jack, who also had a musical background being a musician himself, joined Sergio in a design collaboration/partnership where each bring its own sensibilities and expertise to their creations.
