Brazilian Design Takes Flight at ICFF With Six Designers Worth Watching

From the classic modernism of Sergio Rodriguez and Jorge Zalzupin to the inventiveness of the Campana Brothers, Brazilian design has a niche of its own - where craft, materiality and shape come together in very original ways.  Now a new wave of talent is set to have a chance at the international spotlight at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which runs from May 19-23 opens. As part of the RAIZ (the Portuguese word for root) project, thirteen designers will be showcasing their work at the halls of the Jacob Javits Center next week.  RAIZ is an initiative to from the furniture makers association, Sindmóveis, and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, Apex-Brasil.

Paulo Alves

Having worked as an architect at Lina Bo Bardi office, Alves was always attracted to that mixture of regional craft and modernism, pushing artisanal carpentry to its fullest potential. His “Gilberto” armchair blends the simple wood structure of a chair with the comfort of cushioned leather seat.
