At Dragonette, A Celebrity-Studded Art Sale for a Cause

By  |

Patrick Dragonette, whose Los Angeles design gallery is known for evoking a certain sensual era of Hollywood glamour, never misses a beat. For the annual Le Cienega Design Quarter’s three-day celebration, Legends, held this week, he turned to the ever-imaginative New York-based designer and artist Doug Meyer to create a unique exhibition and sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity. With a preview tonight, the show and sale runs at Dragonette LTD for two days only, this Wednesday and Thursday (May 10 and 11).

For the project, called Color My World, Meyer dreamed up a fictional Bel Air apartment for the fictional Mame Dennis (of Auntie Mame fame) as it might have looked in 1965, in a coloring book-style template on card stock measuring twelve by eighteen inches. Then he asked more than one hundred creative people from the fields of design, architecture, fashion, art, and more to, well, color, fill in, add to, and transform.

The list of contributors ranges from comedian Amy Sedaris to the design dealer Murray Moss, and lured in such architects and designers as David Rockwell, Jamie Drake, Ashley Hicks, Mary McDonald, Harry Heissman, Suzanne Rheinstein, Todd Oldham, Sara Story, Frank DiBiasi, Kelly Behun, Lee Ledbetter, Gene Meyer, Jamie Bush, Ghislaine Vinas, John Derian, and Thomas Paul. Other “colorists” include fashion designers Josie Natori, Trina Turk, Cynthia Rowley, Peter Som, Jeff Mashie, and Mark Badgley and James Mischka along with textile designers Madelyn Weinrib and George Venson, and writer Amy Fine Collins.

The guest artists used the twelve-by-eighteen-inch template Meyer provided as a starting point: some colored between the lines, while others took off on flights of fancy. Starting Wednesday, each piece—a sampling of them can be seen here—will be sold for $200.  And the catch: buyers will not know the name of the designer until after they’ve made the purchase.  Out of town purchasers can call Dragonette LTD number (310-855-9091).
